Time
4.6 h

Total ascent: 197 m Total descent: 811 m

After the climb to O Cebreiro, this day gives you a little more breathing space, although it should not be mistaken for an easy stroll. You set off at altitude, link a series of short climbs and descents, and finish by descending towards the woods and villages around Triacastela.

What you will find

  • It is 20.6 km, with 197 m of ascent and 811 m of descent.
  • The long descent starts at kilometre 8.5 and loses 652 m to the end, with an average gradient of 5.3%.
  • The initial descent begins as soon as you leave O Cebreiro and requires careful attention to the ground.
  • Liñares, Hospital da Condesa, Alto do Poio and Fillobal mark a day in which the altitude is constantly changing.
  • Iglesia de Santa María la Real is beside the start and can be visited before you set off.
  • Triacastela is small but has albergues, bars and a shop: the first place of the day where you can sort everything out without walking any further.

The stage, step by step

Leaving O Cebreiro

You start beside the village of O Cebreiro, still very much in mountain country. The first descent comes between kilometres 1 and 3.3; do not rush it, as your legs are recovering from a demanding day.

Liñares and Hospital da Condesa

Liñares and Hospital da Condesa appear in the first half. After the initial descent, the Camino climbs again, first briefly and then more steadily as it approaches Alto do Poio.

Alto do Poio and Fillobal

Alto do Poio marks the beginning of the prolonged descent. Fillobal comes later, once you have already been descending for some time, and can be a good opportunity to sit down and see how your knees are coping.

The final descent to Triacastela

From kilometre 8.5 to 20.7, the Camino loses height steadily. Let your legs do the work without throwing yourself downhill: fatigue from the previous day often appears precisely here.

What to see on stage 27

Iglesia de Santa María la Real de O Cebreiro

The ninth-century church stands at the starting point. If you arrived the previous day without much energy left, the morning offers a second chance to see it before beginning the descent.

Alto do Poio

Alto do Poio acts as a hinge in the route. Up to this point you still have to gain height; afterwards, the long descent towards Triacastela begins.

Liñares

Liñares appears early and retains the mountain-village atmosphere that accompanies the first kilometres. It is a small place, but it helps you understand that the descent into Galicia is already under way.

Triacastela

Triacastela comes at the end of a descent that makes itself felt. The finish invites you to recover at an unhurried pace and leave any thoughts of walking further for another day.

Where to sleep in Triacastela

In O Cebreiro, you can set off from Albergue do Cebreiro. Albergue Linar do Rei is in Liñares, while Albergue Xunta Hospital da Condesa allows you to stop before reaching Alto do Poio. Albergue Bar Puerto is there. If you complete the stage, Albergue de Peregrinos de Triacastela is the public option at the finish.

Where to eat and refuel

For breakfast in O Cebreiro, you can look at Mesón Antón or Venta Celta. Along the route, A Reboleira and Bar-Restaurante Aira do Camiño are two specific places to consider for a stop. In Triacastela, Restaurant Esther offers somewhere to eat on arrival; the village also has other options.

Practical tips for this stage

Set off with a full bottle

O Cebreiro is the last convenient point before a largely rural day. Carry water and do not plan on finding an intermediate supermarket.

Control the descent

The loss of height between kilometres 8.5 and 20.7 totals 652 m. Take short steps and use poles if you have them: the descent is tiring even if the day seems easier than the previous one.

Make the most of the shorter stage

The average duration is 4.6 hours. You can keep a comfortable pace and take proper breaks to recover after Villafranca–O Cebreiro.

Decide where you will sleep before setting off

There are options in O Cebreiro, Liñares, Hospital da Condesa, Alto do Poio, Fillobal and Triacastela. Knowing your destination avoids extending the descent while looking for accommodation.
