The stage, step by step
Leaving Zafra
You leave Zafra and its historic monuments behind to tackle the first kilometres. The clearest descent begins around km 4 and continues to km 6.3, with 106 m of elevation loss and an average gradient of 4.7%.
The short climb in the middle
After the descent comes a brief climb between km 6.3 and km 7.8. It gains 34 m—enough to break your rhythm before you enter the gentler section of the stage.
Gentle route towards Villafranca
From km 7.8, a gentle descent continues until km 16.8. It is a long, comfortable stretch for making progress, but it is still worth saving some energy for the approach to Villafranca de los Barros.
Arrival in the City of Music
The final kilometres bring you to Villafranca de los Barros, where you can visit the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Valle and take your time arranging food and somewhere to rest.
What to see on stage 7
Torre de la Candelaria
One of Zafra’s most recognisable monuments. It is well worth seeing before you set off, especially if you start early and have a few minutes to explore the town centre.
Palacio de Zafra
This palace retains eight large towers and a central courtyard of white Renaissance marble. It is a good place to appreciate Zafra’s historical importance before setting out.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Valle
In Villafranca de los Barros, you will find a church combining Gothic and Renaissance features. Its 16th-century vault and main entrance are the standout details.
Where to sleep in Villafranca de los Barros
In Zafra, you can set off after a good night’s sleep at Albergue de Peregrinos Vincent van Gogh Zafra or Albergue Convento De San Francisco. Albergue Municipal Vía de la Plata is also on the route. In Villafranca de los Barros, you have Albergue Las Caballeras, Alojamientos Extrenatura and Albergue Tierra de Barros. There is a much better choice at both ends than in the middle of the stage.
Where to eat and refuel
Do not expect to sort out food halfway through the stage: there is not a single bar or shop along the route. Leave Zafra with food and water, and wait until Villafranca de los Barros for a proper meal.
