Villafranca and Pereje
You leave Villafranca with a long day ahead. Pereje appears soon, and the Camino still follows the lower part of the valley, so keep your pace steady even if your legs feel strong.
Trabadelo and La Portela de Valcarce
Trabadelo and La Portela de Valcarce mark your progress towards the mountains. You can still stop and reorganise your rucksack here, but do not count on reaching the final section of the day with everything still to do.
Ambasmestas, Vega de Valcarce and Las Herrerías
The route continues through Ambasmestas, Vega de Valcarce, Ruitelán and Las Herrerías. Between kilometres 13.3 and 19.3, a gradual climb appears and gives you a chance to start conserving your legs.
La Faba and La Laguna de Castilla
La Faba and La Laguna de Castilla lie just before the main effort. From kilometre 20 onwards, the gradient becomes constant, and the climb to O Cebreiro demands patience rather than speed.
Arriving in O Cebreiro
When you reach O Cebreiro, you have reached the stage’s highest point, 1,291 m. The weather can change abruptly here: cold, fog and snow are serious considerations at this altitude.

Iglesia de Santa María la Real de O Cebreiro
The ninth-century pre-Romanesque church is one of the first places worth seeking out when you arrive. After the climb, going inside and taking time to explore the village completely changes the mood of the day.
Pallozas de O Cebreiro
The pallozas preserve O Cebreiro’s traditional mountain architecture. One of them operates as a museum and is open from Wednesday to Sunday, which is useful to know if you would like to see inside.
La Faba
La Faba is more than just another village on the route: it appears as the valley starts to fall away and the gradient takes centre stage. It is the moment to check your water, warm layers and pace.
O Cebreiro
Arriving here marks the entrance into Galicia and a change in the atmosphere of the Camino. The altitude is felt in both the landscape and the temperature, especially when clouds cover the mountain.
Where to sleep in O Cebreiro
Villafranca allows you to set off with a bed booked at Albergue Municipal Villafranca del Bierzo. If you want to shorten the day, Albergue Municipal de Pereje and Albergue Crispeta in Trabadelo are two possible stops before the final climb. Further on, there is Albergue Municipal Vega de Valcarce; at the finish, Albergue do Cebreiro means you will not need to keep searching after the effort.
Where to eat and refuel
Before leaving Villafranca, you can have breakfast or a meal at Mesón Don Nacho or El Padrino. In the mountain section, Nova Ruta and Bar Refugio del Cazador are specific places to consider for a stop when they are open. In O Cebreiro, you will also find places to buy basic supplies, including O Horreo.
Practical tips for this stage
Set off in good time
The final climb is long and does not leave much room for rushing. Start early, spread your effort and save breaks for the section beginning at kilometre 20.
Carry enough water
Do not rely on finding an open shop in the final part. Leave Villafranca with a full bottle and refill in the valley villages whenever you have the chance.
Bring warm layers even in hot weather
O Cebreiro reaches a maximum altitude of 1,291 m and can experience intense cold, fog or snow. A waterproof layer and something warm make sense even in summer.
Choose where to finish
You may arrive late in O Cebreiro if the climb proves difficult. Decide beforehand whether you will sleep in Trabadelo, Vega de Valcarce or at the finish itself.
