Physical training before the Camino

Physical training before the Camino

Start early

Ideally, begin training at least 8 weeks before your departure date. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, start with 5-6 km walks and increase each week. The goal is to comfortably walk 20-25 km with a backpack on varied terrain.

Don't focus only on walking: include leg, back and core strengthening exercises. Squats, lunges and planks are your best allies. A strong core will protect you from lower-back pain when carrying a loaded pack.

Train with your gear

It is essential to do at least the final weeks of training with the backpack you will carry, loaded with the actual weight. This way your body will adapt and you will discover any fit issues before starting. Also train with your definitive footwear to break them in completely.

Don't forget your feet

Toughen the skin of your feet by walking barefoot at home and apply anti-friction cream. Your feet will take thousands of impacts daily: the more prepared they are, the fewer blisters you will suffer. And remember: trimming your toenails straight and short before starting can save you a lot of trouble.
