The Compostela: what it is and how to get it

What is the Compostela?

The Compostela is a Latin document issued by the Pilgrim Office at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. It certifies that you have completed the Camino de Santiago for religious or spiritual reasons (including inner searching). Its origin dates back to the 13th century, when pilgrims needed to prove they had completed the journey to receive the promised indulgences.

Today, the Compostela has become one of the most iconic documents in the world of pilgrimage. More than 300,000 are issued each year and it has become a personal symbol of achievement and transformation for pilgrims from all over the world.

Requirements

To receive the Compostela you must meet two conditions: have walked at least the last 100 km on foot or horseback (or 200 km by bicycle) and have done so for religious, spiritual or searching reasons. Your pilgrim credential must have at least two stamps per day for those final kilometres. If your motivation is purely athletic or touristic, you can request a distance certificate instead.

Where and when to collect it

Head to the Pilgrim Office, located at Rúa Carretas 33, very close to the Cathedral. Usual hours are 8:00 to 20:00 in high season (April-October) and 10:00 to 19:00 the rest of the year. Be prepared to queue in summer, especially in July and August, when waits can exceed an hour. Present your stamped credential and your ID or passport. The process is free of charge.
