The stage, step by step
From Puente de Domingo Flórez to Carballeda
4-70 Bodega Chillout and Cafeteria Los Arcos are still close to the start. The route descends between km 2.3 and 3, then continues towards Carballeda de Valdeorras, where you can find Ana María Díaz Díaz pharmacy and Cafetería PONTENOVA - CENTRO SOCIAL.
Carballeda and the undulating Sil landscape
Between km 11.5 and 12.8, the path loses 41 m before a 68 m climb up to km 14.5. The landscape combines vineyards with the Ribeira Sacra, with the Sil as a constant reference along the route.
O Barco de Valdeorras
The descent between km 14.5 and 19.3 brings you towards O Barco. It is the best place on the stage to eat and shop: restaurants such as Mesón O'Isla, Restaurante San Mauro, Pulpería El Dorado and Cociña do Lar are concentrated here, along with supermarkets including Froiz and Gadis.
Vilamartín and arrival in A Rúa
After O Barco, the route feels more solitary again. San Jorge appears on the way and, in Vilamartín de Valdeorras, you will find Albergue Municipal. A Rúa comes at the end of the day, with Albergue de Peregrinos A Rúa and Albergue Casa da Solaina.
What to see on stage 3
Iglesia de San Estevo
The parish church of A Rúa dates from the 12th century and was remodelled in the Neoclassical period. Its three naves form one of the main architectural highlights at the end of the stage.
Iglesia de San Juan de Roblido
This Romanesque church was later remodelled in the Neoclassical style. Its presence provides a historical pause on a stage dominated by vineyards and the Sil valley.
Cañones del río Sil
The stage enters the territory of the Ribeira Sacra and gives you a sense of the Sil’s deep, enclosed valley. The vineyards of Valdeorras are integrated into the hillsides and accompany much of the route.
Viñedos de Valdeorras
Valdeorras has maintained a winemaking tradition dating back to Roman times. Godello and Mencía are the wines most readily associated with this section.
Where to sleep in A Rúa
When leaving, you can use Albergue Casa Rosa or the municipal pilgrims’ albergue in Puente de Domingo Flórez. Midway through the stage, you will find Albergue O Bailarín and, further on, Albergue Municipal in Vilamartín de Valdeorras. In A Rúa, you have Albergue de Peregrinos A Rúa and Albergue Casa da Solaina. Accommodation is quite spread out, so decide in advance how far you want to walk.
Where to eat and refuel
Puente de Domingo Flórez allows you to have breakfast or set off with provisions from BomVita and 4-70 Bodega Chillout. Carballeda offers a break at Cafetería PONTENOVA - CENTRO SOCIAL, Bar Mar or Bar Martillo. The widest choice is in O Barco, with Mesón O'Isla, Restaurante San Mauro, Alpha Raíces, Asados y Bodega Peyma, Pulpería El Dorado and Cociña do Lar. After O Barco, facilities become more limited again; towards the end, you will find San Jorge, Stop and O Retorno.
Practical tips for this stage
Do your shopping in O Barco
There are no continuous facilities along the middle section. O Barco is the safest place to replenish water and food, with Froiz, Gadis, Eroski, Mercadona and other shops.
Plan the 31.4 km carefully
This is one of the longest days on the Camino de Invierno, surpassed only by the stage from Quiroga to Monforte. Although the elevation gain is moderate, reaching A Rúa requires an early start and avoiding too much time spent before O Barco.
Book if you want to stop halfway
Albergue O Bailarín and Albergue Municipal in Vilamartín de Valdeorras are useful alternatives for breaking up the day. If you plan to use either, confirm availability before setting off.
Do not expect a guaranteed water source
There are no reliable marked fountains anywhere along the route. Leave Puente de Domingo Flórez with enough water and use the shops in O Barco to top up your supplies.
