The stage, step by step

Leaving Vila Franca de Xira

You start in Vila Franca de Xira, where it is worth having breakfast and buying what you need. The route soon leaves the town and heads towards the open Tagus landscape and the agricultural land of the Ribatejo.

The long, repetitive middle section

The terrain remains very gentle, with just 19 m of ascent and 16 m of descent. The landscape changes little for several kilometres, so settle into a comfortable rhythm and do not expect a succession of villages.

An intermediate break if you need one

Around halfway, there are a few isolated options: O Sonho, Bar União Desporto E Recreio De Vila Nova Da Rainha and Snack-Bar Dois M's. Treat them as specific opportunities rather than a continuous chain of services.

Arriving in Azambuja

Services and accommodation become concentrated again on arrival. In the final section you pass Tipoia, Versátil and Café do Xico, and in Azambuja you can finish your shopping or find your bed.

What to see on stage 2

River Tagus

The river defines the character of this stage and helps you find your way along a very gentle route. The walk runs between the riverbank and the agricultural land of the Ribatejo.

Ribatejo fields

Known as the Garden of Portugal, the region appears here as broad cultivated spaces and open horizons. It is a simple landscape, but very different from the urban surroundings of the previous day.

Vila Franca de Xira

This is the starting point and the last place where you can sort everything out easily: from here, the landscape opens up and services become scarce. Make the most of the morning by leaving well fed and with your pack ready.

Azambuja

The destination brings services back and gives you a chance to rest after a day without major difficulties. It is also the starting point for the longer stage to Santarém.

Where to sleep in Azambuja

You can sleep in Vila Franca de Xira, which has Hostel DP, Hospedaria Maioral and Vilatejo. If you prefer to complete the stage, Azambuja has Albergue de Peregrinos da Azambuja. There is enough accommodation at both ends, but planning an overnight stop in between is not really practical.

Where to eat and refuel

Vila Franca de Xira has plenty of options at the start, including Imperial Dine, Burger Ranch and Casa Benfica, as well as cafés such as Flor do Tejo and Café Aracua. Along the way there are occasional stops such as O Sonho and Snack-Bar Dois M's; in Azambuja, you can shop at Aldi, My Auchan or meu super. Between these points, do not expect a wide choice.

Practical tips for this stage

Carry something for the middle section

Although there are specific stops such as O Sonho and Snack-Bar Dois M's, the stage crosses a very open agricultural area. Leave Vila Franca de Xira with water and some food, especially if you are walking outside normal opening hours.

Be ready for the monotony

The difficulty lies not in the gradient but in maintaining your rhythm through a landscape that changes very little. It is a good day to recover your legs, take in your surroundings and avoid pushing too hard.

Shop before setting off

In Vila Franca de Xira you can do your shopping at Supermercado Flora, My Auchan, Pingo Doce, Aldi or Intermarché. If you arrive late in Azambuja, you can still find Aldi, My Auchan or meu super at the destination.

Use the day to rest

With 20 km and an average duration of 4.4 hours, this stage lets you reach Azambuja with time to spare. There is no need to turn it into a race: save your energy for the next stage, which is 33 km.
