The stage, step by step

Leaving Caldas de Reis

Caldas is a good place to have breakfast before walking: Caprichos, Cafetería Termas and Café Bar Taíno are near the start, along with Froiz and Clemente for shopping. The route begins by climbing towards Santa Mariña de Carracedo.

Woodland and the Valga River

After the initial climb, you enter a greener section with dense woodland and the Valga River as a reference point. The route tends downhill between km 6.5 and km 8.8, then loses another 79 m between km 9.5 and km 11.5.

Valga and Pino Manso

Around Valga, you have Bar Pardal and, a little further on, Fonte de San Miguel. Mirador de Pino Manso is worth a pause: its views across the Ulla River valley provide a welcome break from the woodland sections.

Pontecesures and Padrón

The stage continues towards Pontecesures, where you can find a supermarket and a pharmacy before tackling the final kilometres. In Padrón, the choice of places to eat and sleep widens again, with Albergue de Peregrinos de Padrón as the municipal option.

What to see on stage 11

Santa Mariña de Carracedo

The religious complex lies on the initial climb from Caldas de Reis. It is the first landmark on a stage that soon changes from an urban setting to woodland and valley scenery.

Valga River

The river accompanies some of the most enjoyable sections of the day. Dense woodland and damp conditions can leave the ground muddy, especially after several days of rain.

Old watermills

The mills are scattered along the route as remnants of the area’s former use of the water. They are not a separate visit, but they help you read the landscape as you walk through the valley.

Mirador de Pino Manso

The viewpoint offers views across the Ulla River valley and is one of the stage’s most rewarding stops. If you have time, it is worth pausing for a few minutes before continuing towards Pontecesures.

Pontecesures

The town marks the approach to Padrón and is also a meeting point with the Variante Espiritual. Its location makes it practical for a break or for picking up supplies before the finish.

Where to sleep in Padrón

Caldas de Reis has a convenient choice at the start, including Albergue Timonel, Albergue As pozas Termais, Albergue O Cruceiro and Albergue Agarimo. Towards the end, you will find Albergue Camiño do Sar and Albergue da Meiga, while Padrón has more options, including Albergue de Peregrinos de Padrón. If you want to secure a bed without rushing the day, Padrón is the simplest choice.

Where to eat and refuel

Caldas de Reis has the widest choice at the start: O Muíño, A Senda and Mesón Bermaña are good places for breakfast or a meal before entering the woodland. After that, stops are more spread out: Truckstop Cafe restaurant O Castro around km 7, Bar Pardal a couple of kilometres further on and Cafe bar Los Camioneros beside the road. In Pontecesures, you have Eroski and Froiz, while Padrón has cafés and restaurants again for the end of the day.

Practical tips for this stage

Carry water from Caldas

The only clearly located fountain in the middle section is Fonte de San Miguel. Although the valley accompanies part of the route, do not count on finding drinking water beside the river.

Be ready for mud

The woodland can be wet or muddy, especially in spring. Footwear with good grip and walking poles, if you normally use them, will make walking more comfortable.

Do not skip Pino Manso

This is a short stage, with an average walking time of 4.1 hours. You can easily stop at Mirador de Pino Manso without turning the walk to Padrón into a race.

Shop before the final section

Services are irregular between Caldas and Valga. If you need anything specific, buy it before leaving or use the supermarkets in Pontecesures before continuing towards Padrón.
