The stage, step by step

Leaving Baena

Baena is the best place to have breakfast, buy water and sort out your food for the day. Before setting off, you have Lidl, Churrería Luna, Los Palancos, Mesón Casa del Monte and several pharmacies, as well as Albergue Ruta del Califato.

The first descent

The profile loses 164 m between km 4.2 and 7.5, with an average gradient of 5%. This is the most pronounced section of the day; afterwards, the route eases off and enters a much more open landscape.

Campiña with little variation

The descent continues between km 11.4 and 16.2, but only drops 45 m at an average gradient of 0.9%. The terrain presents no major technical difficulties, although the lack of visual variety can make it feel a long way.

Entering Castro del Río

Services are concentrated near the end: Sabariego, Serprix Mari y Rafa, Centro Ahorro Maxcoop and several bars are at the entrance to Castro del Río. You can also eat at Arezzo or Los Arcos before looking for the Albergue de peregrinos.

What to see on stage 6

Baena and its olive-growing tradition

The departure offers an introduction to the olive-oil culture of the Campiña cordobesa. Baena has its own protected designation of origin, making it a good place to buy oil before setting off.

Torreparedones

The Torreparedones archaeological site, near Castro del Río, contains Iberian and Roman remains. It is not an immediate stop on the route, but it is the main archaeological site associated with the area around the destination.

Castro del Río, the Cervantes town

Miguel de Cervantes was imprisoned in Castro del Río in 1592 while working as a commissioner responsible for royal provisions. The town preserves this historical connection as part of its identity.

Campiña landscape

The stage gives you a clear view of Córdoba's agricultural landscape: olive groves and open farmland, with little change in the terrain. Its breadth is beautiful, but it is worth accepting that it may feel monotonous.

Where to sleep in Castro del Río

In Baena, you can set off from Albergue Ruta del Califato. On arrival in Castro del Río, you have the Albergue de peregrinos near the end of the stage. There is no intermediate hostel where you can split the day, although 20.4 km is a reasonable distance to complete in one day.

Where to eat and refuel

Baena offers options for breakfast or buying provisions before departure: Los Palancos, Pizzeria Atusa III, Saratoga - tapas & copas, Mesón Casa del Monte and Churrería Luna. Do not rely on finding a bar during the walk. Near Castro del Río, you can stop at La Piscina, Bar Vera, La Cabreriza, La Cabaña, El Zorro or La Bicicleta, and eat at Arezzo or Los Arcos.

Practical tips for this stage

Set off with enough water

The profile is easy, but the stage crosses an exposed area and you should not count on finding a fountain on the way. Buy water in Baena and do not wait until you are thirsty to drink.

Prepare for the monotony

The middle section crosses Campiña and olive groves, with little change in the scenery. Keep a steady pace, take something to occupy you and do not measure the day only by visual landmarks.

Control your pace on the first descent

Between km 4.2 and 7.5, the route loses 164 m at an average gradient of 5%. It is comfortable if you regulate your pace, but can put strain on your knees if you go too fast.

Have the finish organised

Castro del Río's services are concentrated in the final kilometres. The Albergue de peregrinos is near the end; having it arranged will let you rest before looking for food or doing your shopping.
