The stage, step by step

Sarria and the way to Barbadelo

Sarria is the last convenient place for breakfast and for making sure your rucksack is properly organised. You pass through Vilei and reach Barbadelo; Fonte de San Salvador appears around kilometre 1.4, followed by A Fonte de Arriba further on.

The climb towards Calvor

The main climb starts early and maintains a steady gradient to Calvor. There is no point using up energy trying to keep up with the groups leaving Sarria: there is still a long way to go.

Marzan, Morgade and Ferreiros

After Calvor come Lugar de Ortoá, Marzan, Morgade and Ferreiros. A Fonte de San Silvestre and Fonte dos Peregrinos are in this section, which invites you to walk at an unhurried pace and make the most of each break.

Mercadoiro, Vilacha and Portomarín

A Pena, Mercadoiro and Vilacha lead you towards the final section. The descent begins when the destination seems close and continues all the way to Portomarín, so save some attention for the final steps.

What to see on stage 29

Barbadelo

Barbadelo appears early and retains the atmosphere of the first villages on this part of the Camino. It is a natural place to check the map, drink some water and make sure the initial climb has not made you start too hard.

Ferreiros

Ferreiros comes after Morgade and before the descent to Portomarín. Albergue de Peregrinos de Ferreiros also makes it a practical alternative for anyone who needs to split the stage.

Iglesia de San Nicolás de Portomarín

Iglesia de San Nicolás is one of the most recognisable Romanesque buildings at the finish. The visit fits particularly well after the final descent, when you can explore Portomarín without watching the clock.

Iglesia de San Pedro de Portomarín

Iglesia de San Pedro completes a walk through Portomarín’s heritage. It is a good way to end the day before turning to accommodation and dinner.

Where to sleep in Portomarín

If your stage begins in Sarria, Albergue de Peregrinos de Sarria lets you organise the previous night. To split the route, there are Albergue de Peregrinos de Barbadelo, Albergue De Peregrinos De Calvor and Albergue de Peregrinos de Ferreiros. If you reach the finish, Albergue de Peregrinos de Portomarín is the public option at the end.

Where to eat and refuel

Sarria is the best place for breakfast: La Pensión de Ana and O Descanso are two specific options before setting off. Along the way, it is wise to carry something to eat. In Portomarín, Spar allows you to shop as soon as you arrive. And if you want a proper meal before leaving, Pulpería Luis de Sarria is a good way to say goodbye.

Practical tips for this stage

Tackle the climb early

The climb between kilometres 2.3 and 7 gains 187 m. Set off at a comfortable pace and do not try to make up time in the first hour: the day is more enjoyable when you reach Ferreiros with energy to spare.

Carry water from Sarria

There are several fountains in the first section, including Fonte de San Salvador, A Fonte de Arriba, A Fonte de San Silvestre and Fonte dos Peregrinos. Even so, leave with a full bottle and do not rely on a single stop.

Book if you have a clear destination

Sarria concentrates the pilgrims starting the final 100 km. If you want to sleep in Barbadelo, Calvor, Ferreiros or Portomarín, decide on your destination before setting off.

Save your legs for the finish

The final descent begins at kilometre 18.5 and continues to 22.5. Fatigue becomes noticeable just when Portomarín seems within reach.
