The stage, step by step
Leaving Mansilla de las Mulas
Before setting off, you can buy supplies at Eco Tienda or Alimentación and fill your water bottle. The climb begins to make itself felt from km 0.8, so there is no need to start too fast even though the total distance is short.
Puente Villarente
Puente Villarente is the first place where the day offers a proper break. Hospederia Filosofia (Hostal Casa Blanca), Albergue El Delfín Verde and Albergue San Pelayo cover different needs; you can also sit down at El Delfín Verde and look for Fuente del Peregrino.
Arcahueja and the climb
After Puente Villarente, you pass through Arcahueja. The path continues gaining height until km 13.5, with an average gradient of 0.8%; the sensible approach is to keep a comfortable pace rather than chase the finish.
The descent and León
Between km 13.5 and 16 comes the steepest descent, with an average gradient of 2.9%. The route then approaches León. For accommodation, you have Albergue Santo Tomás de Canterbury, Albergue Check in León or Albergue de las Benedictinas Carbajalas.
What to see on stage 20
Puente Villarente
Puente Villarente is where you can change your pace without abandoning the day. The stop comes at a useful moment for eating, resting and checking how you are coping with the climb.
Arcahueja
Arcahueja appears while you are still in the uphill section. Rather than remembering it as an isolated postcard view, you will probably remember it as the point showing that the climb is well advanced and the descent is still to come.
Real Colegiata de San Isidoro
The Real Colegiata de San Isidoro preserves an exceptionally important Romanesque complex and the frescoes in its Pantheon. It is an especially rewarding visit after entering León.
León
León was the historic capital of the medieval kingdom of Castile-León and remains a significant place on the Camino de Santiago. The arrival changes the tone of the route: the solitude of the plateau gives way to a lively city full of streets and activity.
Where to sleep in León
In Mansilla de las Mulas, you can set off from Albergue Gaia or Albergue El Jardín del Camino. Puente Villarente offers Hospederia Filosofia (Hostal Casa Blanca) and Albergue San Pelayo; Arcahueja has Albergue La Torre. In León, Albergue Santo Tomás de Canterbury and Albergue de las Benedictinas Carbajalas are two options worth considering.
Where to eat and refuel
You can leave Mansilla with something bought at Eco Tienda. In Puente Villarente, you have El Delfín Verde; Arcahueja offers Restaurante Las Pallozas. If you wait until León, El Tiento is one option among the city's restaurants, while Mercadona allows you to buy something for later.
Practical tips for this stage
Do not confuse short with flat
The average duration is 4.1 hours, but the climb runs from km 0.8 to km 13.5. Set off at a pace you can sustain.
Stay in control on the descent
The descent between km 13.5 and 16 is the steepest section. Take it slowly, especially if you are carrying a full rucksack.
Make use of the known fountain
Fuente del Peregrino is in the Puente Villarente area. Even so, leave Mansilla de las Mulas with enough water and treat it as a useful top-up, not your only plan.
Do not consider the day over when you arrive
If you reach León early, set aside some time for San Isidoro. The stage may be short, but the city deserves more than arriving, showering and closing your rucksack.
