The stage, step by step
Leaving Sigüeiro and Puente del Tambre
Leave Sigüeiro and cross Puente de Sigüeiro, also known as Puente del Tambre. The first kilometres retain a rural, wooded feel, with a fountain near the start and plenty of room to walk at a good pace.
The woodland climb
There is a 59 m climb between km 2.8 and km 4.5, followed by a shorter but more concentrated rise between km 5.8 and km 6.8: 50 m at an average gradient of 5%. It is brief, but worth tackling before entering the urban area.
Tambre industrial estate and urban approach
From the high point, the route descends steadily towards Santiago. It passes through the Tambre industrial estate and then through parks and streets, with services such as Cafe Poligono, Farmacia Meixonfrío and Gadis.
Catedral de Santiago and Plaza del Obradoiro
The final kilometres cross Santiago and gradually take on the atmosphere of arrival. You can replenish your supplies at cafés and restaurants in the city centre before entering Plaza del Obradoiro and standing before the Catedral de Santiago.
What to see on stage 6
Puente de Sigüeiro
The medieval stone bridge crosses the Tambre River and is one of the last major landmarks before Santiago. Its origins date from between the 13th and 14th centuries, and it combines Romanesque and Gothic elements.
Woodland and rural paths at the start
The first kilometres retain the Camino's peaceful atmosphere before the city approaches. This is the most enjoyable section for walking slowly and savouring the final morning on the route.
Parque del Tambre
This peri-urban area marks the transition between the rural landscape and Santiago. After the paths and woodland, the park signals that the finish is close, although urban sections still remain.
Catedral de Santiago and Plaza del Obradoiro
The square in front of the Catedral de Santiago is the finish of the Camino Inglés from Ferrol. Once you arrive, you can visit the cathedral and go to the Oficina de Peregrinos to request the Compostela if your credential has been stamped.
Where to sleep in Santiago de Compostela
Accommodation is concentrated in Santiago, where you can choose from Dream in Santiago, A Fonte de Compostela, Albergue Acuario (Santiago de Compostela), Albergue Santo Santiago or Albergue Fin del Camino. There are also options closer to the centre, such as Albergue O Fogar de Teodomiro (Santiago de Compostela), Hostel SP 55, Albergue The Last Stamp and Hospedaje San Pelayo. Book ahead if you want to stay near the cathedral.
Where to eat and refuel
In Sigüeiro, it is worth having breakfast or buying supplies before setting off. During the first part, services are scattered, including Mar de Esteiro, Restaurante O Castro and Restaurante D'Santiago; as you approach Santiago, cafés such as Tabaniscas, Café Bar Gigirey and Moito Coffee (Santiago de Compostela) appear. In the city, you can eat at A Taberna da Feira, O Afiador (Santiago de Compostela) or Pulpería A D'María.
Practical tips for this stage
Set off early to enjoy the arrival
The stage takes an average of 2.7 hours. If you leave early, you can reach Santiago before midday and have time for the Catedral de Santiago, the Oficina de Peregrinos and the historic centre.
Carry water, but do not overpack
There are plenty of fountains along the stage: Fuente, Fonte de Tabaniscas, Fonte dos Salgueiriños de Arriba and Fonte do Parque de Carlomagno. Even so, leave Sigüeiro with a full bottle.
Accept the industrial section
The Tambre industrial estate is not the prettiest part of the Camino, but you pass through it quickly. Parks and urban streets follow; stay alert so you do not miss the waymarks among traffic and junctions.
Plan for the Compostela
If you want to request the Compostela, carry your credential with the required stamps and allow time for possible queues at the Oficina de Peregrinos. The cathedral and Plaza del Obradoiro are best enjoyed without having to rush away.
