How to Find Walking Companions for the Camino de Santiago

How to Find Walking Companions for the Camino de Santiago

The Fear of Walking Alone

It is the most common fear among those preparing their first Camino de Santiago: "What if I go alone?" The reality is that the vast majority of pilgrims who start alone end up walking in a group. But if you prefer to plan ahead, there are several ways to find companions before you leave.

1. Peregrinia: Companions by Affinity

In our Companions section you can search for pilgrims who match you in:

  • Route and approximate dates
  • Walking pace (relaxed, moderate, fast)
  • Age range
  • Language

You can send a direct message or join an existing group. Groups have real-time chat to coordinate before and during the Camino.

2. Facebook Groups

There are dozens of active groups:

  • "Camino de Santiago - Peregrinos" (largest in Spanish)
  • "Camino de Santiago Forum" (largest in English)
  • "Camino Portugués" (route-specific)

Post a message with your route, dates and pace. You will receive replies within hours.

3. On the Camino Itself

The magic of the Camino is that companions appear naturally:

  • In albergues: the communal dinner is the best time to connect
  • Walking: you naturally pair up with people of similar pace
  • In stage bars: the 7am coffee is a classic meeting point

4. Friends of the Camino Associations

Many associations organize group departures with fixed dates. Search for the association in your city or province.

Tips for Walking in a Group

  • Flexibility: groups form and dissolve naturally. Don't tie yourself down
  • Pace: find people with your same rhythm. Forcing the pace creates frustration
  • Space: respecting moments of solitude is as important as company
  • Communication: if you don't want to walk with someone one day, say so naturally
