Blisters: The Pilgrim's Greatest Enemy

Over 70% of pilgrims suffer blisters on the Camino de Santiago. They are the number one cause of quitting. The good news: with proper preparation, you can drastically reduce the risk.

Prevention: Before You Leave1. Broken-In Footwear

Never start the Camino in brand new boots or shoes. Your footwear should have at least 100 km of use before you start. Your feet should be comfortable from the first step.

2. Technical Socks

Invest in quality trekking socks. Look for flat seams, moisture-wicking material (merino wool or synthetic) and wrinkle-free fit. Bring at least 3 pairs and change them daily.

3. Pre-Camino Toughening

Walk with your full gear at least 4-6 times before leaving, increasing distance. Your feet need to adapt.

Prevention: During the Camino

• Vaseline or anti-friction cream: apply to friction points (heels, toes, sole) before heading out each morning
• Dry feet: change socks if they get wet. During breaks, remove boots and air out your feet
• Preventive tape: if you notice a hot spot (pre-blister), stop immediately and cover with medical tape or Compeed
• Don't walk more than your body can handle: the first days are crucial. Better to fall short than to push too hard

TreatmentSmall Blister (No Intense Pain)

Don't pop it. Cover with a hydrocolloid patch (Compeed) and leave it for 2-3 days. The patch absorbs the fluid and protects new skin.

Large or Painful Blister

1. Clean the area with soap and water
2. Sterilize a needle with alcohol or flame
3. Pierce at the bottom edge (so it drains by gravity)
4. Don't remove the skin: it's your natural protection
5. Apply betadine or antiseptic
6. Cover with gauze and medical tape (not Compeed on an open blister)
7. Check every night and repeat if it refills

Recommended Anti-Blister Kit

• Compeed patches (various sizes)
• Cloth medical tape (Leukoplast)
• Pure vaseline or Nok cream
• Betadine or chlorhexidine
• Sterile gauze
• Sterile needle (sewing needle, sterilized)
• Small scissors
